KOLKATA: Aspiring youths in the performing arts arena got a shot in the arm on Thursday when 78 of them were assured of structured healthcare support, in the form of health insurance cards. Calcutta Broadway – a Bikram Dasgupta Foundation initiative – handed over Broadway Health insurance cards to the first batch of beneficiaries.
It is for the first time in the history of the Performing Arts industry in Bengal and perhaps in India that Calcutta Broadway, as an entrepreneurially driven ‘private’ platform meant to nurture upcoming talent, has innovated a Health Insurance product in the form of Broadway Health to provide structured and long term support to the people behind the scenes.

“It is the first of its kind unique, comprehensive health insurance card to provide structured and long term support to the youth in performing arts area. It not only covers hospitalization expenses but also the OPD charges and day-to-day over-the-counter (OTC) health care expenses for the beneficiaries.” said Bikram Dasgupta.
Noted personalities from the performing arts field who were present on the occasion lauded the initiative.
“The most important thing to a struggling artiste is his and his family’s health, his material comfort. This Broadway Health card will not only cover the artiste but also up to 5 other family members along. This is something absolutely incredible”, said Sohini Sengupta of Nandikar.
Hailing the project dancer Tanusree Shankar said, “This health card will help a lot of technicians, musicians, young artistes and make them stable in future. The initiative of doing the health insurance for the young artistes is a big step because the daily medical expenses adds up to quite a heavy amount for them, who earn on the basis of their performances.”
Eminent personalities from the field of music, theatre and dance, who were present at the occasion included theatre exponents Rudraprasad Sengupta, Kaushik Sen, music director Debojyoti Mishra among others.
