CHENNAI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has begun the process of approaching state governments for collecting the list of artefacts missing from the country. The complete database would be uploaded on ASI's portal.
"We have asked our field officers to get information from respective state departments, museums and temples on the missing artefacts and idols," a senior ASI official said.

The development comes as the Centre is taking steps to retrieve stolen idols from abroad.
Last year, the custodian of centrally protected monuments released a statement with details of theft of antiquities from monuments, sites and museums maintained by the ASI for 2015 and 2016, which was uploaded in the official portal.
Details of artefacts and idols stolen from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan have already been uploaded.
