36 hours later, police register two FIRs
Kolkata: More than 36 hours after five girls aged between 19 and 23 — out for a drive and evening snacks after a Diwali get-together — were allegedly beaten up by a group of slum-dwellers off EM Bypass on Monday, cops registered two separate cases on Wednesday and will begin questioning the slum-dwellers and the girls from Thursday.
Around 9.45pm on Monday, three of the girls found a public toilet shut and were trying to find a place to relieve themselves in a dark alley behind a popular food hub near the Ultadanga-Lake Town flyover when they were thrashed by locals who claimed they were urinating in front of their homes.
The slum-dwellers lodged a counter complaint alleging the girls and their family members had beaten them instead, leaving several persons injured, and damaged their homes.
Based on their complaints, cops initiated cases under sections 354 (molestation), 506 (criminal intimidation), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 379 (theft). However, none was arrested till late on Wednesday. “We have started two cases based on the complaints the two groups submitted,” said an officer.
Cops visited the area on Wednesday and collected CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events.
Speaking to TOI, one of the five girls said they had visited Bidhannagar North police station multiple times in two days demanding speedy registration of FIR. “We are glad that cops have finally registered the FIR. We hope they expedite their investigation and arrest the culprits at the earliest. We demand justice,” she said.
On being asked about the allegations levelled against them by the slum-dwellers, she said, “We have the necessary proof and will submit them to cops if they ask. We are ready to cooperate with the investigation.”

TOI also visited the slum and found most of the homes shut and the residents allegedly involved in the incident missing from the area. “The girls who were stopped from urinating in front of our homes started the abuse, which led to a brawl. A woman from our area was severely injured and we, too, demand justice,” said a woman who witnessed the incident on Monday.
