MUMBAI: Metro 2B work between BKC and Chembur will finally get a push as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has appointed a new contractor two years after the earlier contract was scrapped over lack of progress.
The D N Nagar to Mankhurd Metro-2B Corridor is 23.5-km long and will have 22 stations. MMRDA has set a deadline of October 2022 for commissioning this line, which is being built at Rs 11,000 crore.
The construction of the viaduct is being undertaken in 7 different packages.
For package 6, MBZ-RCC joint-venture was awarded a contract at Rs 521 crore for the 5.9-km long elevated lines, including 6 stations — MTNL Metro, SG Barve Marg, Kurla Terminus, Kurla East and Chembur.
This joint venture was able to complete not more than 4.48 per cent of the work in 30 months as against the targeted 60 per cent.
The new contractor, NCC, was appointed in the authority’s meeting chaired by state chief secretary Manu Kumar Srivastava. MMRDA will pay the contractor Rs 760 crore for this work.
Metropolitan commissioner SVR Srinivas said, “The new contractor will have to complete the work in 24 months.” Challenges still persist on this stretch as MMRDA has not been able to clear the route of several structures, both legal as well as unauthorised.
MMRDA has also appointed the contractor to implement Intelligent Transport System for Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) at a cost of Rs 427 crore.
