BALLARI: D Triveni was elected as the new mayor of Ballari City Corporation (BCC) on Wednesday. Triveni, all of 23, is the youngest to hold the post in Karnataka.
The Congress candidate, who represents ward no. 4, emerged winner with 28 votes, defeating Nagaratna of the BJP. Five independent members supported the Congress candidate. B Janaki, also of the Congress, was elected unopposed as deputy mayor.
Of the total 39 wards in BCC, Congress had won 26, followed by BJP with 13.
The mayor seat in BCC is reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate.
Triveni, whose mother Susheelabai was also a Ballari mayor from 2019-2020, was elected as a BCC member when she was only 21. A diploma holder as a health inspector, Triveni cut her teeth in politics in Ballari, with both her parents being active members of the Congress party for the last several years. Triveni said she was happy to have got an opportunity to serve the people and was ambitious about the development of Ballari city.
"I have the experience of being a corporator for the last two years and have addressed many problems in my ward. I have noticed that the city's underground drainage system has a problem. I will focus on this issue, while I try to maintain the city's cleanliness," she said.
She was hopeful about meeting the expectations of the people by taking everyone into confidence and working with them. "I expect cooperation from all to ensure good governance," she added.
