PUNE: The Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, better known as Balbharati, will publish new Sanskrit language textbooks for standard VIII and IX (Sampoorna and Sanyukta) for the academic year 2017-18.
The new books will be written and taught completely in Sanskrit. No help of other languages will be taken while teaching the new curricula.
For words or concepts that are tough, QR codes will be given in the textbook, which when scanned, will explain the particular word or the concept.
The new books, based on activity-based learning, will have a lot of pictures accompanying the text.
Apart from Sanskrit, Balbharati will also be changing the books for Std VII and IX as per their routine upgradation process. These books too will have QR codes.
Neeta Shere, a parent whose daughter is now pursuing her masters in Sanskrit, said, “When my daughter was in school, she was the only one who had taken Sanskrit as a subject from Std VIII. Now students will not take Sanskrit just for scoring marks as they did earlier.”
An official from Balbharati said, “The entire nature of the book has been changed this time. Till now, instructions were generally given in a different language. For example, “fill in the blanks” would be written in Marathi even in a Sanskrit textbook. But now all the instructions will be in the Sanskrit language. Also, now students will be encouraged to talk in the Sanskrit in their class.”

And not just the books, but the evaluation of the subject too will be activity-based. Another official said, “We want the students to master the language by the time they come to Std X and hence we started the change from Std VIII itself.”
The new textbooks will come with QR codes, which can be scanned using a cellphone to understand the meaning of particular words and concepts in the Sanskrit language
The books will be based on self-and activity-based learning, aimed at building constructivism approach
Apart from Sanskrit, Balbharati will also be changing the books for Std VII and IX as per their routine process
