New Delhi:
The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) has written to chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal demanding immediate reconstitution of the town vending committee (TVC) for NDMC. TOI had recently reported that most NGOs appointed to the TVC either don't exist or don't work for the welfare of vendors.
Vendors' associations say that the TVCs were arbitrarily appointed.
"No criteria was adopted for their appointment. While the list of NGOs was faulty, even the street vendors made members of the committee were not asked before their nomination," said Tasnim Arif, programme coordinator, NASVI.
Though the policy was notified in January, it couldn't be implemented as the government had not formed TVCs. "The process is getting delayed unnecessarily and vendors are at the receiving end. The government has already diluted the Street Vendors Act by deciding to go for 70 TVCs. There is no point in appointing members who don't work for the welfare of vendors," said Arbind Singh, national convenor, NASVI.
