NEW DELHI: A three-year-old child was crushed by a water tanker when the driver was reversing the vehicle at Narela on Monday. The driver was dragged out of the truck and thrashed by the local residents before being handed over to police.
Residents claimed that the tanker was allegedly operating in the area without permission. The driver was reversing the vehicle wearing a headphone and could not hear the eyewitnesses' warning about the child, who was behind the truck.

Around noon, Aaliya was playing outside her house at A-5 block in Narela, when the tanker driver started reversing the vehicle against a wall. Witnesses said that they raised an alarm to alert the driver when they noticed the child near the rear wheels. Some of them even tried to pull her out, but the driver - instead of hitting the brakes - stepped on the accelerator and crushed her under the wheels. Police said that a case has been registered for causing death due to negligence. Cops are verifying the allegations of the accused using a headphone while driving.
Meanwhile, the child's family members and neighbours staged a protest demanding a ban on parking of tankers in the area. They also initially refused to allow the cops to recover the child's body from under the vehicle. The protest went on till late afternoon after which the family members were pacified and the body was sent for an autopsy. Officers are scanning CCTV footage of the area to verify the allegations of the family members.
Police say that the child's parents worked at the Narela Industrial Area and stayed at a nearby JJ colony.
