NEW DELHI: A
case was
registered against the
Delhi Golf Club on Thursday, two days after
Delhi government had
complained of illegal
felling of trees on its premises.
Police sources confirmed the developments and said that a case has been registered at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station under sections 8, 13 and 24 of the Preservation of Tree Act, 1994.
The incident came to light when environment minister Imran Hussain ordered an inspection of Delhi Golf Club on the directions of CM Kejriwal.
Subsequently, a four-member team visited the club and dug out around 425 logs from there. The inspection report confirmed that pits were dug on the premises and logs of different sizes were dumped in them.
Based on their observations, the department, led by range forest officer of south forest division in Tughlaqabad, Satyender Prakash, filed a complaint with the police, demanding action against the club.
Police said that they will be carrying out an investigation on their part to determine the extent of violations committed by the club.
The club had earlier denied the allegations and claimed that no adverse steps, damaging the environment, had taken place.
“The case is an attempt to malign the reputation of the club and an effort to wrongly implicate its authorities. We will take every possible measure to follow the course of investigation and extend all possible support,” the club had said in a statement.
Investigating officers are now planning to visit the site of the damage and will be speaking to the forest department for more information about the case.
