We all see social and environmental problems around us; but only a few begin the quest to search for solutions and amongst those few, stands one very promising globally acknowledged innovation by Faridabad based Manav Rachna Educational Institutions: ‘Pariyayantra’.

Amit Kumar Singh

Imagine if one invention could convert automobiles from polluters into air purifying devices! This revolutionary concept, developed at the Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies (Deemed-to-be-University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956) has made it to the ‘United Nations Young Champion of the Earth’ listing from the Asia Pacific Region.A team of researchers at the institution comprising Dr. B S Gill, Amit Kumar and Prachie Sharma have devised a revolutionary product Pariyayantra - an Air Pollution Mitigation product that cleans atmospheric air through filters fitted on vehicles.

Pariyayantra does not require any power to operate and is equivalent to the filtration provided by six room air filters. These air filter units can be mounted on the roof of any vehicle — buses, cars, auto-rickshaws and even two-wheelers. As the vehicle moves, air passes through the holes in front of the device. The filters fitted inside the unit, trap the pollutants. What comes out is clean air. A pilot project flagged off by the Central Pollution Control Board in November 2018, is currently in progress. 30 Pariyayantra devices have been fitted on the roofs of buses in Delhi-NCR. The results are highly encouraging. Each bus cleans 250,000 litres for every kilometer of travel.
Capture

“Air pollution is a problem that is killing children more than terrorism today. Pariyayantra filters are biodegradable and have already been installed in 30 buses, collecting 1.5 kilograms of dust in just 10 days, with 77 percent of the particles captured being smaller than 10 microns which is an alarming revelation of the air quality in our cities”, shares Amit Kumar.

The United Nations Young Champions of the Earth aims to celebrate and support individuals aged between 18 and 30 years who have outstanding potential to create a positive environmental impact. This acknowledgement is just a reflection of Manav Rachna’s pioneering innovations to some of the world’s most unrelenting environmental challenges with the vision for a more sustainable future. A global jury will select seven young champions of the earth in September 2019. These winners will receive seed funding, intensive training, and tailored mentorship to bring their big environmental ideas to life.
Such promising innovations by young minds are the paramount illustration of the credence and tenets the institution divulges to its students. The ambition is to deliver not just knowledge from the books, but also to nurture the leaders of a sustainable future.
