Mysuru: Mandya district child protection officer S Diwakar said protecting a girl child is the most challenging task today, and there should be a policy to safeguard her.
There is an alarming decline in the sex ratio in the state and because of this, there is an urgent need for a stringent policy to save girl child from social evils, added Diwakar while speaking after inaugurating an open interaction programme, organized by department of women and child development and District Legal Services Authority, on girl child policy at JSS Law College on Monday.

The policy is being formulated by the state government in a bid to protect a girl child from the time she is in her mother's womb till she attains 18 years of age.
The majority of victims of human trafficking are young girls, Diwakar said. The girls are mostly transported to Arab countries for prostitution, organ selling, massage parlous, begging or to work as domestic assistants. "In our state, three human trafficking corridors are active and they are directly linked to international traffickers. We should learn from the anti-human trafficking squad in Andhra Pradesh that has taken stringent measures to prevent child trafficking," he said.
Stating that dropouts from school is a major concern in society, he said 90% of the children between the age group of 14 and 18 who are dropping out of educational institutions are girls.
