MUMBAI:
Kieron Pollard was bought by
Mumbai Indians in the 2010
IPL auctions for a then-record $750,000. The West Indies all-rounder was an emerging star at that time and MI were determined to have him in their ranks.
IPL ScheduleOver due course, Pollard justified the hefty price tag, thanks to his ability to take apart bowlers when MI were looking to accelerate towards the closing stages. What's more, he is a brilliant fielder and has pulled off some stunning catches in the IPL.
Also, there was a time when he would claim wickets just when MI needed them.
However, injuries took a toll on the burly Trinidadian's body over the years and he shifted his focus mainly to batting. Nevertheless, since last season, his batting performances, too, have taken a bit of a dive.
Pollard has featured in all of Mumbai's three games this year but managed to score only 33 runs at an average of 11. Last year, he played nine games and totalled 133 runs.
These displays have taken a toll on MI's overall results and it will be interesting to see what the 31-year-old does in the coming matches.
"Kieron has been a proven performer for Mumbai Indians over the years. He has done so well for the team, so I am sure he will fight back soon," said
Quinton de Kock, the team's opener on the
eve of the game against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede. "Also, we don't rely on the performance of one or two players. It's the team's effort that counts," added the wicketkeeper batsman from South Africa.
The kind of impact that Pollard has on MI's fortunes was evident in 2017, when he scored 385 runs at an average of 29.6 and at a decent strike rate of 140. His consistency was one of the factors that led to MI winning the IPL for the third time.
