Trafficking bid foiled at Kolkata airport

An active intervention from a child protection officer attached with Unicef at the Kolkata airport and NGO Shakti Vahini led to the rescue of two alleged Bangladeshi nationals, who were reportedly being trafficked to Bengaluru around 3.30pm on Tuesday. Though the two women were told they were being sent to Canada, the airport police stated not all documents were found to be in order. “The fake Indian documents claim their age to be 22 and 24 years. We are ascertaining their age,” said an officer from Bidhannagar police.

KOLKATA: An active intervention from a child protection officer attached with Unicef at the Kolkata airport and NGO Shakti Vahini led to the rescue of two alleged Bangladeshi nationals, who were reportedly being trafficked to Bengaluru around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
Though the two women were told they were being sent to Canada, the airport police stated not all documents were found to be in order.

“The fake Indian documents claim their age to be 22 and 24 years. We are ascertaining their age,” said an officer from Bidhannagar police.
Gargi Saha, who works at the Unicef’s Patna office, found the two women looking lost near the security check. “They had no luggage and spoke broken Bengali. The tone indicated they were from across the border. After nearly 20 minutes of counselling, they claimed to be from a area near Dhaka and hadcrossed the border illegally. I immediately called up senior officers and NGO contacts in Patna and Kolkata. The CISF personnel, too, helped me till cops arrived,” said Saha.
