MUMBAI: A 35-year-old businesswoman foiled the attempt of a fraudster who claimed to be an army man and tried to trick her into paying him money through an e-wallet app. Natasha Tuli on Monday approached Bandra police station to register a complaint after filing an online complaint with the Maharashtra State Cyber Cell.
Tuli says on realizing his game was up, the fraudster abused her and even threatened to rape her.
According to the complaint, on September 3, the fraudster, who identified himself as Manoj, called Tuli's 70-year-old mother, who runs a tailoring business, and placed an order to get a dress stitched for his daughter.
"He said he would make an advance payment of Rs3,000. My mother gave him my number. He called me and said he would pay through Paytm. I found instead of crediting money to my Paytm wallet, I had got a one-time password (OTP) for making payment of Rs3,000 to 'Manoj Army'. I called him up and questioned him about it, and said I would complain to the police. He started abusing and threatening me," Tuli has stated in her complaint to the cyber cell.
Cyber expert, Ritesh Bhatia, said e-wallet apps are not user-friendly. "Citizens do not understand the difference between debit and credit," he says, advising users to exercise caution.
