In Assam, quack beaten to death for raping women

GUWAHATI: A quack was beaten to death at Sitoi Adong village in Karbi Anglong district on Thursday for allegedly raping women on the pretext of treating them.
Hussain Ali, 45, lived in Raikata Sandanpur in the neighbouring Hojai district but frequented Sitoi as a 'kabiraaj' (traditional medical practitioner).
"Ali visited the house of a blind woman on Wednesday, telling her he would perform rituals to heal her 22-year-old daughter.He then took her to another room and drugged her before raping. The woman said Ali had threatened her against telling anyone," a police source said.
The following day, Ali went back to the house. "He said he had to perform more rituals. When he was told the daughter was not home, he took aside another relative of theirs - a minor - and raped her ... When the family finally came to know, there was an uproar. Locals gathered and the mob, mostly women, started beating him up. Police were alerted but by the time they got to the spot, he had been badly injured. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries," the source added.
Medical reports are awaited. No arrests have been made yet.
