Why Mysuru Brahmin grooms are looking for Varanasi brides

MYSURU: Shortage of Brahmin brides in Mysuru isn’t a fresh crisis. Brahmin families in the city have been struggling to find the right match for eligible grooms, especially for those who are into traditional occupations like priesthood, cooking, farming etc. Now, two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have come up with an inter-city solution to resolve this matchmaking crisis.
Mysuru-based Vipra Paraspara Sahaya Samithi and Kendriya Brahmana Mahasabha of Varanasi have decided to play cupid, and as a first step, held a brainstorming session in Mysuru on Saturday.A five-member team of the Kendriya Brahmana Masabha, led by its president Kamalaksha Upadhyaya, interacted with Mysuru-based Brahmin families.
The Varanasi team got an overwhelming response as nearly 500 parents turned up for the session.
Speaking on the occasion, Kamalaksha Upadhyaya stated that families in Varanasi are ready to enter into a matrimonial alliance with their counterparts in Mysuru. “Brides from Varanasi are willing to wed men engaged in the traditional occupation in Mysuru. We want these marriages to be simple, devoid of dowry demands. Besides, both the NGOs will give a guarantee to the bride’s family that their daughter will be looked after properly and that there will not be any matrimonial dispute,” he said.
Marriage proposals will be finalised only after the horoscope or kundali matching is done, he added.
Parents from Mysuru who interacted with the Varanasi team enquired on how to send marriage proposals, how the young men and women could meet each other, marriage customs etc.
They also discussed cultural differences, which may become an obstacle in the later stage of a marriage. It was decided that Anuraga Matrimony, which is operating in Bengaluru and Mysuru, will provide a platform for families from both the cities over finalising proposals.
Speaking to STOI, HV Rajeev of the Vipra Paraspara Sahaya Samithi, said he has already made five visits to Varanasi.
“Shortage of brides is one of the biggest issues being faced by the Brahmin community in Mysuru. We are trying to build an alliance between families from these two cities. Initially, our target is to find brides for 10 Mysuru youths,” he concluded.
