PITHORAGARH: The mortal remains of late finance minister Prakash Pant were consigned to flames at Rameshwar Ghat in Pithoragarh on Saturday with full state honour. A huge crowd, including Union defence minister Rajnath Singh, governor Baby Rani Maurya, state chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, state cabinet ministers, among others, gathered at the cremation ground for his last rites and paid their tributes to the departed soul.

On Saturday morning, his body was brought in a special plane to his home town Pithoragarh. His body was kept at Dev Singh Sports field where political dignitaries and public paid tribute to the veteran leader. Thereafter, Pant’s body was taken to his home at Kharkot for last religious rituals, from where the leader embarked on his final journey to Rameshwar Ghat.
59-year-old Pant died in Texas, United States, on June 5. He was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. A three-day state mourning was declared in Uttarakhand after Prakash Pant’s demise. A state holiday was also declared on Thursday.
A pharmacist by profession, Pant was first elected an MLA from Pithoragarh district in 2002. Besides being the finance minister, Pant also held a host of other portfolios including parliamentary affairs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to express his condolences after Pant’s death. “Anguished by the passing away of Uttarakhand Finance Minister Shri Prakash Pant,” he tweeted.
