MUMBAI: Yusuf Memon (54), a convict in the 1993 serial blasts, died of heart attack in Nashik Central Jail on Friday morning. The younger brother of Dawood aide and 1993 blasts alleged mastermind Tiger Memon, Yusuf was serving a life sentence.
Prison superintendent Pramod Wagh said Yusuf complained of uneasiness and chest pain in the morning. He was brushing his teeth around 10am, when he suddenly collapsed.
Yusuf's brother Essa, who is also serving life sentence, was standing next to him when he collapsed, said Wagh.
Yusuf was taken in an ambulance to Nashik civil hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead' at 10.40am.
Wagh said Memon's body has been sent for an autopsy to Dhule Medical College. His relatives have left from Mumbai to claim the body. The family is yet to decide on whether to bury him in Dhule or get his body to Mumbai on Saturday, said a jail source.
Yusuf and Essa were lodged at the Nashik jail in July 2018. Earlier, they had spent time at the Aurangabad jail and Mumbai's Arthur Road jail. In 2013, the Supreme Court had rejected his plea to be granted relief from his sentence on the grounds that he was suffering from schizophrenia.
More than 250 people were killed and over 700 injured when 12 blasts ripped through Mumbai on March 12, 1993. While 'mastermind' Tiger and his brother Ayub are still at large, their other family members were arrested.

In 2007, Yusuf, Essa and their sister-in-law Rubina were given life imprisonment by the special Tada court. They were convicted on the grounds that they were present when several conspiratorial meetings had taken place in their flats in Al-Hussaini building in Mahim and for storing arms and explosives. Their brother Yakub was also convicted and awarded a death penalty. He was executed by hanging at the Nagpur Central Jail on July 30, 2015, following the rejection of his clemency plea.
Others in the Memon family-brother Suleiman, mother Hanifa and Yakub's wife Raheen-were acquitted by the Tada court, giving them benefit of doubt. Father Abdul Razzak, also an accused, died during trial. Rubina is Suleiman's wife.
Yusuf's advocate Farhana Shah was unaware of his death. "There was no direct evidence against him. Yusuf was unwell and also suffering from mental health ailments. He was granted interim bail. But later he was taken back into custody," she said.
