Thespian Lalan Sarang dead; last rites in Shivaji Park today
Stage and film actress Lalan Sarang, known especially for her role in Vijay Tendulkar's play 'Sakharam Binder', died in the city on Friday morning, after a period of illness. She was 79.
Sarang's family said her remains would be taken to the family home here on Saturday morning. The last rites will be completed later in the day at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, according to her wishes, as her husband Kamlakar Sarang was also cremated there, said a family statement.
Her family includes her son, Rakesh Sarang, a director and screenplay writer in both film and television.
Sarang was most famous for her role of Champa in 'Sakharam Binder' , which generated considerable controversy. She was Maanik in Tendulkar's 'Gidhade' and also did 'Kamala'. She also took on roles in adaptations of plays like SN Pendse's 'Rathchakra'. Her husband, Kamlakar, also produced a number of the plays she acted in. She made a surprise return to the stage in 2012 after a long hiatus, directing and acting in 'Kalachakra', originally written by Jaywant Dalvi.
In films, she generally played character roles, notably in 'Samna', and 'Ha Khel Sawalyancha', and more recently in 'Mahek'. She also played a number of roles in Hindi television soaps and plays.
Besides being an actor, as well as a producer along with her husband, Sarang was also a prolific author, writing multiple books about theatre and forms of acting. She was also known as a restaurateur, having founded the Tilak Road restaurant Masemari, known for its elaborate seafood menu. She was known as a culinary expert. Originally from Goa, her family migrated to Mumbai and finally settled in Pune.
