GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh advocate general Nilay Dutta, who was also a member of the high-level committee constituted by the ministry of home affairs in 2019 for recommendations on implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in Assam, died of a massive heart attack in Karnataka’s Coorg on Sunday.
He was 68 and is survived by his wife, son and daughter. The eminent lawyer had gone to Coorg on Wednesday to celebrate his 46th marriage anniversary.
On Friday and Saturday, Dutta had himself uploaded several pictures of his anniversary celebrations with his family and close friends on his Twitter handle.
Dutta, who was among the most prominent and distinguished legal brains of Assam and the northeast, suffered a massive heart attack around 2.30am on Sunday in the resort where his family was staying and he died before reaching hospital.
He was cremated in Bengaluru as his body cannot be brought back to his home state Assam for the next three days due to Covid-19 protocols in Karnataka.
Dutta was an avid sports lover. He was the president of the Assam Cricket Association and did umpiring in several international cricket matches.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while mourning the demise of Dutta, said, “Assam has lost one of the brightest lawyers, who had significantly contributed to many other fields, including sports administration. His demise has created a huge void which will be difficult to fill up.”
Sarma’s Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu, while condoling Dutta’s untimely death, said he was a legendary legal luminary of the northeast.
