CHENNAI: Noted filmmaker and actor T P Gajendran passed away on Sunday due to ill health at his residence in the city. He was 68.
Gajendran made a stride as a director during 2000s with a series of films, such as Budget Padmanaban (2000), Bandha Paramasivam (2003), Middle Class Madhavan (2001), featuring actor Prabhu in the lead in all the movies, portraying the struggles of middle class families in a comic way.
His debutant film, Veedu Manaivi Makkal (1998), itself was a complex family drama with so many characters but presented with zero confusion. Director-actor Visu, with whom Gajendran worked as an assistant director, played the lead role in the film.
However, for this generation, he is rather known as a comedian who played small roles on the big screen. He has directed 15 films, but has acted in more than 100 films. Even on the day of his demise on Sunday, the scene from the movie Pammal K Sambantham where Gajendran and Kamal Haasan have an argument of sorts was repeatedly shared on social media. Kamal Haasan himself shared the dialogues between them on Twitter to condole Gajendran’s death.
Last year, Gajendran became a topic of discussion after M K Stalin visited him at his residence to inquire about his health after which it became known that both were college mates.
Condoling Gajendran’s death, the chief minister said his contribution to the cinema cannot be dispensed with. Apart from the chief minister, other film industry personalities such as Radha Ravi, Goundamani, Senthil, Vyapuri also paid last tributes to Gajendran in person.
