A corrigendum
A TOI report ("Housewife lured with railway job, raped" dated September 12, 2009, page three) stated that the complainant had alleged that "a man picked up the victim from near Netaji Bhavan Metro station and brought her in his car to his New Alipore flat around 8 pm. Saiful had been waiting there and the duo allegedly raped her for hours. Around midnight, the New Alipore resident — who has been identified as SNM Abdi — dropped her at Bhawanipore and threatened her not to disclose the matter."
The excerpt was written on the basis of a police briefing in Lalbazar the previous day, whereas the woman's written complaint to the police did not accuse SN M Abdi of rape.
The complainant had, in fact, specifically written that Abdi was not even present at the time of the alleged incident.
TOI has no malicious or malafide intentions against Abdi. We believed the police version in good faith – which turned out to be untrue. We sincerely regret the adverse impression our report may have conveyed. Abdi is a well known journalist and respected member of our fraternity. We duly reported Abdi’s honourable acquittal in January 2011. After the clean chit, Abdi said that he had been framed.
