Former archbishop of Bangalore Ignatius Paul Pinto passes away

Archbishop Emeritus and first bishop of Shivamogga diocese Ignatius Pinto, 98, passed away in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

BENGALURU: Archbishop Emeritus and first bishop of Shivamogga diocese Ignatius Pinto, 98, passed away in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
He was at the Senior Citizens’ Home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Richmond Town when he breathed his last at 1.30pm.
The funeral and burial services will be held on Friday 10 February 2023 at 10am St Francis Xavier’s’ Cathedral, Fraser Town.

Born in Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada, Pinto was a student of St Joseph’s College in Bengaluru and Loyola College in Madras, before joining St Mary’s Seminary in Bengaluru and Papal Seminary in Sri Lanka. He served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Mariapura, was appointed as Secretary at Bishop’s House and also worked as a professor at St Mary’s Seminary.
He also worked as secretary at archbishop’s house in Bengaluru in 1956, and went back to studies in Madras.
In 1960, he was appointed chancellor and secretary at archbishop’s house. For a decade thereafter he was the principal and manager of St Joseph’s School, Briand Square before he took up several roles in the church. In 1988, he was appointed as first bishop of Shivamogga diocese by the then pope John Paul II through his apostolic letter ‘Bonevolentiam Quidem Nostram’.
He was promoted as archbishop of Bangalore on September 10, 1998 and was installed on 25 November 1998. He resigned six years later in 2004.
