From PM Modi's call to the people of India from the ramparts of the Red Fort after taking oath in 2014, the government's cleanliness programme has come a long way. Construction of toilets, a key aspect of the Swachh Bharat mission, has seen unprecedented momentum in these three years as is seen in the graphic below:

The government has also launched Swachh Bharat rankings to rate the different cities in the country on the basis of cleanliness.
The rankings, released annually, are based on the feedback of the people.
The government has also claimed that sanitation coverage in the country has seen significant growth since 2014. It has released the following data to support the argument:

Several states have come forward to support the Centre's movement, launching their own programmes. Maharashtra is the latest entrant; it has formed 'Good morning' squads in a bid to curb open defecation across the state and bring about a change in the mindset of people indulging in this practice.
These teams have been asked to not only monitor areas where this practice is still prevalent, but also check whether residents have access to toilets.
