Vikram Patel awarded John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award
PANAJI: The Gairdner Foundation picked Goa and Boston-based Dr Vikram Patel for the 2019 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award for his research in global mental health especially mental health problems in low-and-middle-income countries.
Announcing the awards, the Gairdner Foundation said that Patel’s "pioneering approaches" for the prevention and treatment of mental health in lower income nations was one of the main reasons for selecting Patel for the award.

Laureates receive a $100,000 cash honorarium and will be formally presented with the awards on October 24 at the annual Canada Gairdner Awards Gala in Toronto.
"I share a firm belief that solutions to many health problems lie in the resilience and resources which harbour in our communities,” said Patel in an email to TOI. “We need to harness these to empower people and democratize health care.”
Patel is the co-founder of mental health research institute Sangath, which is based at Porvorim. He has dedicated his research career to not just raise awareness about mental health disorders in low and middle-income countries but to also prove that lay and community health providers can help in treating some of these disorders.
This has included the primary care treatment of depression, anxiety and alcohol use disorders, the community-based care of people with schizophrenia and autism, and the prevention and treatment of adolescent mental health problems through school-based interventions.
