RAIPUR: The last rites of veteran Congress leader Motilal Vora were performed by his son Arun Vora in his hometown, Durg, on Tuesday.
The 93-year-old leader had passed away on Monday in New Delhi after he was admitted to Escorts hospital in Okhla a few days ago with a urinary infection. He was also suffering from a lung infection and was put on ventilator support.
A large crowd, including Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and several political leaders, reached Vora’s residence to pay their respects to the departed leader.
The mortal remains of the veteran Congress leader were flown to Raipur from New Delhi on Tuesday.
Chief minister Bhupesh Singh Baghel, his cabinet members, mayor Eijaz Dhebar, Congress legislators, BJP state leaders including Brijmohan Agrawal, Janta Congress Chhattisgarh chief Dr Renu Jogi, Rajya Sabha MP Saroj Pandey paid tributes to the late leader at his residence in Durg. Chhattisgarh governor Anusaiya Uike also visited Vora’s residence at Durg to pay tribute to the former CM of undivided Madhya Pradesh. Condoling the veteran leaders demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is saddened by Vora’s demise and remembered him as a leader with vast administrative and organizational experiences. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Vora was a true Congressman and a wonderful human being.

Shri Motilal Vora Ji was among the senior-most Congress leaders, who had vast administrative and organisational experience in a political career that spanned decades. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and well-wishers,” he tweeted.
Vora—rose from a humble background and scaled greater heights to become a doyen of Congress politics in central India. Cutting across party lines, leaders said Vora was one of the rare politician who had no enemies and was a leader acceptable to all.

Chhattisgarh’s chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has expressed profound grief on the sad demise of the veteran. Paying a humble tribute to late Vora, Baghel said that his demise is an irreparable loss to not only Chhattisgarh but to entire Congress family.
“We have lost a guardian. He started his political career from scratch and made his way to Delhi. He was a dedicated member of Congress party all his life. “Babuji Shri Vora was one of the important people in my life, from whom I had learnt a lot about politics,” said Baghel.
Baghel said that while celebrating Babu Ji’s 93rd birthday on Sunday (December 20), no one expected this tragic news just the next day. He said that as chief minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh, Vora had made immense contribution to the all-round development of the then Chhattisgarh region.
Vora started his public life from journalism. In year 1968, Vora was elected as Corporator of Durg Municipal Corporation. In year 1972, he was elected as Congress MLA for the first time. Later, in year 1977 and 1980 again, he was elected as MLA. The then CM of Madhya Pradesh Arjun Singh had appointed him as cabinet minister. He served as CM of the undivided Madhya Pradesh twice. He had also rendered his services as Governor of Uttar Pradesh and as Union minister.
