On the eve of August 15, 1947, India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, declared independence in his “Tryst with Destiny” speech. Celebrations, however, were marred by communal violence along border regions following Partition.

Just days after an assassination attempt, Mahatma Gandhi, 78, was shot dead in Delhi by Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse over Gandhi’s religious tolerance after Partition.

* War broke out after Pakistani troops infiltrated J&K, the biggest conflict in the region since the 1947 attack, which resulted in J&K becoming an Indian state. The 1965 war lasted less than two months and ended after India pushed Pakistani troops back, forcing Islamabad to accept a ceasefire

* India and Pakistan would fight again in 1971, after East Pakistan launched its bid for independence from West Pakistan. India provided essential support to Bangla troops, leading to the creation of Bangladesh after an eight-month long fight. In 1999, Pakistan would infiltrate J&K again, prompting Operation Vijay in Kargil. Highaltitude combat between two nuclear nations ended in defeat for Pakistan again

LANDSLIDE WINS FOR BJP IN 2014 AND 2019

After a series of scandals under UPA, BJP won a landslide victory in 2014, reducing Congress to its lowest seat tally in the Lok Sabha. Under PM Narendra Modi, the government introduced several welfare and development programmes, including universal health insurance. Despite policies like demonetisation in 2016 proving unpopular, BJP returned in 2019 with another landslide win.
