Telangana: Green India Challenge takes up Jammi Chettu conservation programme
HYDERABAD: To conserve Jammi Chettu (Prosopis Cineraria) and Palapitta (Indian Roller Bird, the Green India Challenge (GIC) has called for Jammi plantation in every village and at every temple during Dasara navaratris.
The Forest departments in coordination with Green India Challenge have prepared proposals to plant 1.25 lakh Jammi saplings in all villages and temples this year.

The Green India Challenge founder J Santosh Kumar said that GIC has taken up the slogan of `Vooru Vooruko Jammi Chettu ( jammi Chettu in every village) – Gudigudiko Jammi Chettu ( Jammi in every Temple) to preserve the extincting jammi due to various reasons.
In Telangana it is customary to worship Jammi tree on Dasara festival. It is also customary to exchange Jammi leaves to relatives and wish them good luck. In view of these priorities, forest minister A Indrakaran Reddy welcomed MP Santosh Kumar's call to take up Jammi in every village and temple in the state on Dasara Navratri celebrations. Telangana endowment department has also taken up the initiative of planting and growing jammi trees in all the temples across the state, he said.
Telangana state tree- Jammi in every village and every temple was started last year and entered second year. The second phase was inaugurated by MP J Santosh Kumar and forest and environment minister Indrakaran Reddy, MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, Forest Development Corporation Chairman Onteru Pratap Reddy and government advisor Ramanachari at Kothaguda Botanical Gardens Urban Forest Park on Wednesday.
Government adviser KV Ramanachari said that CM KCR had declared Jammi Chettu as the state tree soon after Telangana got statehood status. He congratulated MP Santosh Kumar for coming up with a great idea of Jammi , which has been part of daily lives since Vedic times, plantation in every village temple and school.
Organizers of GIC said that those who take part in Jammi in every village and temple can send their photos to the WhatsApp number 9000365000 by typing jammi.
Meanwhile, MP Joginapally Santosh Kumar has been elected as honorary president of Botanical Gardens Walkers Association.
