CHANDIGARH: A septuagenarian couple in Badhra town of Charkhi Dadri district in Haryana committed suicide by consuming sulphas tablets on Wednesday late evening. However, before taking the extreme step, the grandparents of a 2021 batch Haryana cadre IAS officer left behind a note in which they accused the IAS officer’s parents and other family members of ill-treatment and not providing them even two square meals a day.

The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Chand (78) and his wife Bhaagli (77), both natives of Gopi village near Badhra.
In his note, Chand wrote that his sons own property worth around Rs 30 crore in the town but refused to feed them.
He wrote that his soul would rest in peace only when those who committed atrocities on him are punished. He has also pledged to donate all his property and fixed deposits to the local unit of Arya Samaj.
“I could not bear the humiliation at the hands of my own children and that is why I have consumed sulphas. Neelam, Vikas, Sunita and Virender are responsible for my death... No children in this world can commit such atrocities upon their parents... my request to the people who read this letter... and the government is to punish them. Only after that shall our souls rest in peace,” he wrote.
Police have converted the suicide note into a complaint and booked four persons, including the officer’s parents and two other family members of the deceased couple for abetment to suicide. The FIR, registered at Badhra police station, names Chand’s son Virender Arya, his wife Sunita, Neelam, who is wife of Chand’s deceased son Mahender, and her accomplice Vikas, son of
Ved Prakash, as accused.
“I used to live with my younger son Mahender, who had died six years ago. For a few days, his wife Neelam provided me food but later she indulged in immoral activities with Vikas, son of Ved Prakash. When I objected, I was asked to leave home. I had to stay at an old age home for two years. Later my wife got paralysed and we started living with the other son, Virender, but they also started giving us leftover food,” he wrote further.
After receiving information, the police had taken the couple to a private hospital in Badhra but they were referred to civil hospital Charkhi Dadri, where they died.
One of the grandsons of the deceased is an IAS officer and currently undergoing training and another grandson is a commissioned officer in the Army.
