NEW DELHI: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah today appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a cue from former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and call for "a unilateral ceasefire" to solve the tensions on the border.
"I apprised PM Modi that Kashmir is not a problem of law and order and as such it has now become very important to take some major steps against the ongoing unrest in the state.
We have to take steps to resolve the issue in the state in view of the rising tensions along the border," Abdullah said.
"India doesn't want war because it's destructive for all. India wants peace," he added.
Last week, Abdullah had urged PM Modi to address the Kashmir issue politically.
The meeting between the two leaders lasted for over half-an-hour.
Abdullah had also briefed the Prime Minister about the growing unrest in the Jammu and Kashmir state.
Last month, MLA Langate Er Rasheed too had called for unilateral ceasefire.
"If New Delhi is really sincere to initiate dialogue process it must end all operations against terror outfits and declare a unilateral ceasefire before offering unconditional talks to terrorists leadership who are the real custodians of huge sacrifices,” Rasheed had said in a statement.
