COIMBATORE: Construction work of five new buildings on Coimbatore Medical College campus, to accommodate 250 MBBS students additionally, began on Friday.
The foundation stone was laid by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami via videoconferencing. District collector K Rajamani was present.
The medical education department hoped that once the new building is constructed, the Medical Council of India (MCI) will permit the college to increase its MBBS student intake from the existing 150 to 250 students.

The Rs 80crore project includes construction of a new four-storey institutional block with lecture halls, examination halls and demonstration halls to comfortably accommodate 250 students. Two other four-storey blocks are for hostels for boys and girls. There will be a three-storey block for the administration department and a two-storey block for the library.
CMCH dean Dr P Kalidas said, “PWD officials said that they hope to complete the construction in a little more than six months.”
He added, “Once the building is complete and furnished, we will again submit a formal application to the MCI for an increase in intake. After an inspection, if they are satisfied they will give the final approval.”
A PWD official said that the five buildings would be constructed on 3.12 lakh sq ft land.

In January 2015, Coimbatore Medical College applied to increase its student intake from 150 students to 250.
Following this, MCI conducted an inspection and rejected their application stating lack of infrastructure, less faculty, overcrowded girls’ hostels, lack of books in laboratories and no library as the reason. They noted that the current facilities were not sufficient for 150 students too.
Since then, the college has been taking measures to increase the number of faculty and procuring funds for construction of the new building.
The state and the Centre later sanctioned Rs 1.2 crore per extra student as funds for better infrastructure. Of this, 60% would be contributed by the Centre and 40% by state – that is Rs 120 crore and Rs 80 crore respectively.
