CBI ex-chief Ashwani Kumar found hanging

SHIMLA: Former CBI director Ashwani Kumar (69), who had also served as governor of Manipur and Nagaland, was found hanging from the attic of his Shimla residence on Wednesday.
Cops found a suicide note in which he purportedly wrote he was suffering from disease and disability. The note ended with: “I am ending my life. Everyone be happy. My soul embarking on a new journey.” Kumar is survived by his wife and son.
There was no immediate clarity on which disease or disability Kumar, who came from from Nahan in Sirmaur district of Himachal, suffered from.
His wife, son and daughter-in-law were at home the whole day and told police the family had lunch together as usual. After the meal, Kumar went for a walk to the Mall and also visited the Kali Bari temple. On returning home, he completed his puja and also meditated, DGP Kundu said. The body was discovered by Kumar’s son and daughter-inlaw at 7.10pm when they noticed he was missing from his usual meditation spot. The family broke down two doors before reaching the attic, where they saw him hanging.
The 1973-batch IPS officer was DGP in Himachal between 2006 and 2008. He then was appointed CBI director and served between 2008 and 2010. He had also served in the then newlycreated Special Protection Group (SPG) security detail of Rajiv Gandhi between 1985 and 1990. After completing his tenure as Nagaland governor, he had served as chancellor of APG University Shimla.
Condoling his death, DGP Kundu said, “All IPS officers used to take inspiration from him.” The FSL team has inspected the spot and gathered evidence.
