PATNA: JD(U)’s Lok Sabha member from
Valmikinagar and former
Bihar minister
Baidyanath Prasad Mahto, 72, passed away on Friday evening while undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Delhi.
With this, total number of JD(U) member in the Lok Sabha has reduced to 15 from 16.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Valmikinagar constituency in 2009 and 2019 as JD (U) candidate. He was deputy leader of the JD(U) in the current Lok Sabha.
Prior to becoming an MP, he won assembly election from Nautan seat for three times.
He was the state’s rural development minister from 2005 to 2008.
Condoling his death, Bihar CM
Nitish Kumar on Friday said Mahto was very popular in his constituency. His death has caused an irreparable loss to the state’s political circle and society as well.
CM also announced that Mahto’s last rites would be performed with full state honour.
JD(U) state president
Bashishtha Narain Singh also mourned his death. In a message, Singh said, "Mahto was a very strong leader of the JD(U). His death has cause irreparable loss the party."
Bihar information and public relations minister Neeraj Kumar, JD(U) national secretary Ravindra Prasad Singh, JD(U) MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh alias Gandhi Jee, the party’s state general secretary (headquarters) Naveen Kumar Arya and Anil Kumar also condoled demise of Mahto.
