The footage shows the woman constable opening the door of Sashikant Kholgade’s car around 11:30am, reportedly asking him to stop talking on his mobile phone while driving, Times Now reported.
Kholgade is then seen stepping out of the car and slapping the constable.
The first blow threw the constable off her balance, and she steadies herself on a nearby autorickshaw. She then retaliates, after which Kholgade hit back with more powerful blows.
A lawyer named Prateek, who was passing by, noticed a crowd and saw Kholgade thrashing the woman constable, who had a number of bruises and was bleeding from her nose. The lawyer intervened and took them to the Naupada Police Station.
The man has been booked for a slew of serious charges, including molestation and preventing a government servant from carrying out his/her duty. He was produced in a Thane court on Friday.
BJP spokesperson Shaina NC said the Maharashtra government would take strong action against the accused, and expressed concern over the attitude towards woman police constables.
