NEW DELHI: An
injured golden jackal was
rescued on Wednesday from a
road near
Sanjay Van after it was struck by a vehicle.
The jackal was rescued by animal welfare NGO Wildlife SOS who received a call from the people passing through the stretch who noticed the animal. Officials said it has been identified as a 6-month-old female
golden jackal which and is being kept under surveillance.“The animal has sustained external injuries on the neck.
It was carefully transferred to the van and will only be released once it has fully recovered,” said an NGO official.
Experts said the jackal might have strayed out in search of food. Golden jackals or the common jackal belong to the canidae family, native to the Indian subcontinent. The species is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
“Our veterinarians are carrying out the necessary treatment. It is not uncommon for us to receive rescue calls where an unsuspecting animal has been
injured due to negligent or rash driving. Such accidents not only put the life of the animal at risk, but also pose a threat to the safety of the people driving the vehicle,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder Wildlife SOS.
