AURANGABAD: A 20-year-old woman from Padegaon, who had undergone a caesarean section on July 23, died on July 28 following medical complications allegedly brought on by medical negligence.
The gynaecologist at the Gangapur sub-district hospital had allegedly left a surgical cotton mop inside Tanushri Tupe’s abdomen. In the aftermath of the young woman’s death, the gynaecologist was relieved from duties by the health department on July 30.
On Friday, Tanushri’s parents submitted a letter to the Gangapur police station, demanding registration of an offence and action against the doctor.
Meanwhile, Tanushri’s 11-day-old baby boy is doing fine.
According to Tanushri’s father Subhash Asaram Bhokre, he brought her to the Gangapur Sub-District Hospital on July 22. “Monday is the day for routine checkups for pregnant women in government hospitals. But gynaecologist Ravindra Thaval was not available. We were told that he was at his privately-run hospital and would not come to the government hospital. Therefore we went to see him at his hospital, where he checked Tanushri and told us there is a deficiency of water in her body and a caesarean section will have to be performed on her immediately. Thaval quoted Rs 40,000 for the procedure at his hospital, but I insisted on getting the operation done at the government hospital,” Bhokre said.
Subsequently, the pregnant woman was admitted to the Gangapur Sub-District Hospital where Thaval performed a caesarean section on her on July 23 and delivered a baby boy. Bhokre said his daughter started experiencing pain, loose motions and vomiting after the caesarian. “Thaval did not come to see her even when her condition deteriorated,” Bhokre said. Tanushri was his only child.
On July 27, Tanushri was referred and admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad, where she died while undergoing treatment on July 28. Citing evidence of surgical mop with pus found in the abdominal cavity, the autopsy report has concluded “peritonitis in a case of lower segment caesarean section” as the cause.
Medical superintendent of Gangapur Sub-District Hospital Bushra Khan relieved Ravindra Thaval of his duties. Bhokre, however, has demanded that his licence to practise medicine be struck off. Police inspector MT Survase said they have received a complaint from Bhokre. “We are awaiting the report of the medical negligence committee under the district civil surgeon.
