The number of new coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high with over 2 lakh infections being reported in a day, while the active cases surpassed the 14- lakh mark, according to the govt data on Thursday. MHA orders 50% attendance in work, staggered timing at its offices

In view of the "unprecedented rise" in number of Covid-19 cases in Delhi, the Union Home Ministry Thursday said its officers up to the level of Under Secretary can work from home and only 50 per cent staff need to attend office. In an office memorandum, the home ministry said all officers who attend the office can stagger timings with entry into the office spread between 9 AM to 10 AM with corresponding office exit timings and those living in containment zones be exempted from attending office

Of the total new cases, 8,217 infections were reported from Mumbai. The city also reported 49 deaths and 10,097 recoveries. The cases tally here stands at 5,53,159, including 85,494 active cases. Pune reported as many as 1,12,923 cases while Thane reported 83,183 new infections.

2. Identification of another 100 hospitals for PSA plants: Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants manufacture oxygen and help hospitals become self-sufficient in their requirement for medical oxygen while also reducing the burden on the national grid for supply of medical oxygen. 162 PSA plants sanctioned under PM-Cares are being closely reviewed for early completion of 100 percent of the plants to enhance self-generation of oxygen in hospitals especially in remote areas. The health ministry has been directed to identify another 100 hospitals in far flung locations for consideration of sanction for installation of PSA plants.

A meeting of Empowered Group 2 (EG2) was held today to review the availability of essential medical equipment and oxygen during Covid-19. Three important decisions taken today are as explained below -

1. Mapping of oxygen sources for 12 high burden states - Medical oxygen is a critical component in the treatment of Covid affected patients. There has been increasing demand for medical oxygen, especially from the 12 states with high burden of active cases viz.– Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. While the demand in Maharashtra expected to beyond available production capacity of the state, states like Madhya Pradesh do not have any production capacity to meet their demand for medical oxygen. Besides, there is a trend of increasing demand in other oxygen producing states such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, etc.
