NEW DELHI: The Delhi and Mumbai Airports are the world’s 25th and 38th most well connected mega-hubs, according to UK-based air consultancy firm OAG. Its “Mega-hubs International Index 2018” shows that London Heathrow (LHR) tops the list in terms of having the maximum international connectivity.
LHR is followed by Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Toronto Pearson in the top 50 mega-hubs.

Delhi’s IGI Airport is ranked sixth in terms of 'low-cost international mega-hubs' given the dominance of IndiGo here. “Airports and airlines themselves facilitating international connections more and more (on) low cost flights,” says OAG for this ranking that is topped by Kuala Lumpur thanks to AirAsia.
“An airport can have a dominant legacy carrier and still succeed in having LCC megahub status, most notably at Dubai (DXB) and Amsterdam (AMS),” the OAG report says. Giving an area-wise break-up, it says international mega-hubs in southeast Asia are led by Singapore with Delhi at number nine of the regional ranking.
Given the ample scope of expansion at IGI Airport and a second airport supposed to be built for the capital in nearby Greater Noida, Delhi's air connectivity is all set to grow in coming years and it could become one of the biggest mega-hubs.
“The top 50 international mega-hubs are airports with the highest ratio of possible scheduled international connections to the number of destinations served by the airport. Online and interline connections are included and… low cost carriers (LCC) connections are also included,” the latest OAG report says.

“Once again the most internationally connected airport in the world is London Heathrow Airport (LHR)… (It) ranks as the world’s number one megahub. On the busiest day for aviation in 2018, there were 66,000 possible international connections between flights arriving and departing at the airport within a six-hour window,” it adds.
Four of Asia Pacific’s five largest mega-hubs are located in South East Asia, with Singapore Changi ranked eighth globally, followed by Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International at 10, Kuala Lumpur International at 12 and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi at 14.
Mayur Patel of OAG, said: “Robust demand for international air travel is making Asia-Pacific a pivotal region for connecting flights, and the continued year-round growth of Chinese outbound travel is a decisive factor. Asia’s dominance is clear to see but we are likely to see some interesting movements when the new Beijing airport opens.”
