Coimbatore to get govt arts and science college for women

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore would very soon get a government arts and science college for women, its first. Officials of the Directorate of Collegiate Education said they have initially identified a facility for the college at Puliyakulam and were working to get approvals from the city corporation.
In a communication on September 10, the state’s department of collegiate education said it was starting seven new arts and science colleges, including one for women at Puliyakulam area in Coimbatore, to increase the enrolment ratio in higher education and for the benefit of rural students.
The communication said the colleges would be started in this academic year, 2020-2021, and student intake must start this year itself. “For this, steps should be taken to identify a suitable government building, and if not a private building,” the communication said.
Officials of the Directorate of Collegiate Education said they had initially identified a corporation school premises in Puliyakulam area. They have communicated it to the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation through the district collector.
P Ponmuthuramalingam, Coimbatore regional joint director of collegiate education, told TOI that they expected the process to get completed within next month.
The communication said these new colleges would have five courses -- BA Tamil, BA English, B Com, B Sc mathematics and B Sc Computer Science. “We need five classrooms and labs for science courses,” said the official.
As the district had no government arts and science college for women, unlike in Chennai and Namakkal, the state has decided to start one here, he said. There are aided and self-financing arts and science colleges for women in Coimbatore, but no government college.
As per norms, arts courses could have 50 students and science courses could have 30 students, which would be decided by the university to which it would be affiliated, the official said.
Except for the women’s college in Coimbatore, the other six colleges to come up in Ariyalur, Karur, Viluppuram, Virudhunagar, Nagapattinam, and Ranipet would be co-education colleges, the state’s communication said.
