N Nanmaran, CPM leader and former Madurai East MLA, dies

MADURAI: N Nanmaran, a senior CPM leader and two-time MLA of Madurai East constituency, died of a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in Government Rajaji Hospital here on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, he was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital with complaints of breathlessness, following which he suffered a cardiac arrest. He died at 4pm on Thursday. He was 74 and is survived by his wife Shanmugavalli.
Nanmaran, born in Madurai, was drawn towards the Communist movement at a very young age.
He was a good orator in his younger days.
He published a magazine called Kurinji Ithal in 1968 when he became acquainted with the literary wing of the CPM. Nanmaran’s full-fledged political career started in 1971 with political campaign speeches. He wrote books on the lives of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin in Tamil.
He was first elected to the Madurai East constituency in 2001.His qualities as a people's person made the CPM give him the ticket for the Madurai East constituency for the second time in 2006. He was reelected
Nanmaran regularly voiced his demands for the people of his constituency and also for Madurai in the Tamil Nadu assembly and was able to implement many schemes. Nanmaran was instrumental in bringing the IT Park and Tidel Park to Madurai. He worked with others for establishing the Madurai bench of the Madras high court.

Known as “Mr Clean’’ for his uncorrupt political career, Nanmaran could be easily approached by the public to address their grievances.
In February last, he sought a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for his wife as they lived in a one room rented house. The petition for a free house was turned down as he was a government pensioner.
His body would be kept at the party office in Ellis Nagar. The funeral would be held at 4 pm on Friday.
