Sukh Ram Sharma, 94, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi in the wee hours of Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. Sukh Ram was admitted at Zonal Hospital Mandi on Friday after he had a brain stroke and was airlifted to
AIIMS Delhi in a helicopter provided by the state government.
After former chief minister late Virbhadra Singh, Sukh Ram, fondly referred to as “Panditji”, was the tallest leader of Congress party in Himachal.
Sukh Ram’s son and BJP MLA from Mandi, Anil Sharma, said the veteran Congress leader suffered a heart attack again at around 1 am on Wednesday at AIIMS-Delhi and could not be revived. He said that the body of Sukhram will be brought from Delhi to Mandi by road on Wednesday and will be kept at Seri Manch in Mandi at 11 o'clock on Thursday to enable the public to pay their homage to the leader, followed by performing of his last rites.
Sukh Ram was recognized among the strong leaders of the state and was termed as “messiah of the communication revolution” especially in Himachal Pradesh.
