Chennai Corporation acquires machine to check quality of newly laid roads
CHENNAI: The Chennai corporation has acquired 15 compaction meters to check the strength and quality of a newly laid road surfaces.
The machines have been distributed to the 15 zones of the city corporation.
The machine, resembling a lawn mover in appearance, would check if the road mix is dense and strong enough to last at least for a year.
The machine, when placed on the road, will send electromagnetic waves that would penetrate the road surface and travel 40 mm deep and bounce back.
A reading of the reflected waves would help find empty spaces between the tar and gravel. The lesser the empty space, the stronger and denser the road.
The machine is already being used by the highways and civic bodies in Gujarat and Delhi.
