Polling for the third and final phase of Bihar assembly elections concluded today in which the fate of 1,204 candidates will be decided. The exit polls conducted by several news channels and polling agencies suggest that Tejashwi-led grand alliance is ahead of NDA in Bihar and the state is likely to witness a hung assembly. In the event of hung assembly, advantage would be with NDA
Exit polls conducted by Dainik Bhaskar added a caveat that there were tough contests in 30 seats that were too tough to call and if the outcome in these seats were to go against the BJP-JD(U) combine, it could end up short of the halfway mark, which is 122 in a 243-member assembly. The India Today poll too saw the contest as one-sided, giving the grand alliance between 139 and 161 seats and NDA just 69-91 seats. Like the other polls, it did not see the Chirag Paswan-led LJP winning more than a handful of seats. The Times Now-CVoter poll gave the Mahagathbandhan 108-131 seats and NDA 104-128 seats, which suggests that either side could just get beyond the halfway mark or both could fall just a bit short.
Bihar’s electorate reserved its best for the last, clocking a 57.9% turnout in the third and final round of polling for 78 seats on Saturday to take the cumulative voting percentage in the three-phase assembly elections to 56.4%, just a shade below the 2015 figure of 56.6% and the 57.3% recorded in last year’s Lok Sabha polls.
Bihar has voted for change: Congress
With the exit polls for Bihar out, the Congress on Saturday said Bihar has voted for change. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said exit polls are interesting as they provided employment to some people who use small samples, but people speak up at the end. "We are confident that Bihar has voted for a change and Bihar will vote for the change," he told reporters. "People have spoken in the first two phases; the third phase polling is going on. We are more than confident that Bihar has voted for change," he had earlier said.
