MUMBAI: Despite
several recent reports highlighting how vulnerable students are at schools, over 80% of parents in Mumbai believe their
child's school is safe for them, shows a study.
According to the survey, parents acknowledged accidental risks facing their children more than non-accidental
risks like intentional harm, abuse,
exploitation and abduction. "Less than 2% parents from the underprivileged section and less than 20% of parents from privileged backgrounds consider non-accidental risks at school," said the report.
Child Rights and You interviewed 211 parents of children ranging from ages 3 to 14 from privileged as well as underprivileged backgrounds.
Kreeanne Rabadi, regional director, CRY (West), said, "There is a need for awareness about protection that goes beyond physical safety."
Parents from privileged and underprivileged sections feel that sexual abuse (26% and 28%) and kidnappings (18% and 14%) are the biggest threats, followed by accidents (17% and 13%) and bad company (18% and 10%).
